Grammar Focus: The Verb “To be”

Affirmative

I am (I’m) · You are (You’re) · He/She/It is (He’s/She’s/It’s) · We are · They are

Example: I’m Chris. She’s Maria. We’re students.

Negative

I am not (I’m not) · You are not (You’re not/You aren’t) · He/She/It is not (He’s not/He isn’t) · We/They are not (aren’t)

Example: I’m not from Spain. They aren’t teachers.

Questions & Short Answers

Am I…? Yes, you are. / No, you aren’t.
Are you/we/they…? Yes, I am / we are. / No, I’m not / we aren’t.
Is he/she/it…? Yes, he is. / No, he isn’t.

Example: Are you Chris? — Yes, I am.

Pronunciation tip: Link words in “I’m a…” /aɪmə/ and reduce “are” in “You’re a…” /jʊrə/.

Speaking Task: Class “Mixer”

Walk around (or breakouts online) and collect three introductions. Use the model:

Student A: Hello! I’m _____. What’s your name?

Student B: I’m _____. Nice to meet you. Where are you from?

Student A: I’m from _____. Are you a student?

Student B: Yes, I am. / No, I’m not. I’m a _____.

Report back: “This is Marco. He is from Italy. He is a chef.”

Exit Ticket (2–3 minutes)

  1. Write two sentences about yourself using to be. (e.g., “I’m _____. I’m from ____.”)
  2. Answer: Are you a student? (Short answer)

Homework
